LeRoc is known as Modern Jive or French Jive. It is a stylish partner dance that can be enjoyed to virtually any music.
LeRoc started off in the UK back in 1977 when Michel Ange Lau stepped into the French Youth Centre, Centre Charles Peguy in Leicester Square. At this time the French kids were dancing to fast rock'n'roll music to a style they called Le Bop. This was limited by the pace of music as it was so fast, they could only achieve 8 to 10 basic moves. Michel was invited as an organiser and DJ and it soon became apparent that when a piece of Disco music was played the French kids could not dance to it. So, over time Michel began to adapt their style of dance, introducing new footwork and moves which opened the way to what is now known as modern jive.
Michel Ange Lau is known as the Grandad of modern jive, he’s where it all started.
LeRoc was promoted extensively during the 1980's disco era through specialised London clubs, such as LeRoc, Ceroc and Cosmopolitan Jive. These clubs did not merely promote the French style jive; they developed it into a far more complex dance with literally hundreds of moves or figures.
LeRoc is friendly and open to people of any age. You don't even need a partner to enjoy an evenings dancing. It's a great way to socialise and keep fit at the same time.
The format of a LeRoc evening consists of a 45 mins beginners lesson, followed by 15 mins of freestyle so you can practice the moves you've been taught. Then a 45 mins intermediate lesson, followed by freestyle dancing for the rest of the evening. There are LeRoc venues all over the country that you can go to and join in and not feel out of place even as a beginner.
The marvellous thing about LeRoc is that it tends to reach people who would not consider themselves dancers and who would ordinarily not venture onto the dance floor. But once they start to LeRoc they progress to Lindyhop, Salsa, Tango – you name it, they do it.
